Ferry to Vancouver

Tuesday July 2nd

Today we got packed up and went down Tsawwassen to catch the ferry over to Vancouver Island. We had hoped to get on the 10am but didn't quite make it so got the 11am sailing. It was a beautiful day and we sat outside on the back deck the whole way.
The trip took about an hour and half. We got on a big double decker bus and took the trip into Victoria which is the capital city of BC.
We arrived in the downtown area which down by the harbour.  There are lots of lovely buildings down here.

The Empress Hotel. We are not staying here.

The Legislative Buildings lit up at night.

There were some friends already waiting for me in my room in the bed and breakfast!  Alan and Mary went straight to the info centre to find some accommodation.  People had been telling them to book before  they came but they winged it.  They got something two streets back from the legislative buildings and within an easy walk to all the sights downtown.  But when they got there the lady was out and we had to go back four times.  The fourth time there was an envelope on the board outside the door.  Inside were keys and a letter.  The room they had booked, (the cheap one) had been taken so they have been upgraded to the honeymoon suite at no extra cost.  It would have been an extra $60 a night.  Very nice it is too  and Mary so loves a bargain. Actually the street we are staying on is Superior Street and we are now in superior accommodation and I have some room mates as well.

While waiting to get in they walked the local area which is full of heritage houses. They also did one of the walks  on a map they found so time was  not wasted. They discovered an old English Tea  shop at the end of the road and had High Tea which served as a late lunch.  The place was  crowded with pictures of the Royals and all things English.  It was very popular and busy.
They found they are in James Bay Village which must have been settled very early as there are still many Victorian Houses which have been listed and well cared for.
