Monday July 1 Canada Day
Today was a big day in Canada. The
whole place was a sea of red and white and Canadian flags and wall to wall people.
Notice the 4 way stop sign. Everyone stops and then they negotiate who should go first. Needless to say this can take a while with everyone wanted to be seen to be polite!
Greg had planned to take us to the
Gulf of Georgia Cannery . We had saved the tickets from the day at
Langley Fort so we could get in half price. Well surprise suprise it
was free as it was Canada Day. That had its good points and bad
points. It took ages to get there as the traffic was so busy. When
we did get there and luckily found a park we had to queue for ages to
pay for the parking. Kathleen kindly offered to stand in the queue
so that the rest of us could get in and start looking around. And it
was scorching hot out side.
So here a few pictures taken in and
round the cannery.
The cannery is built on the wharf and the boats would tie up alongside with their catch and would be taken straight inside and processed.
Here I am sitting on one of the old fishing boats.
The fish cleaning and gutting table. the wire me are there to look like workers.
it was the women who gutted and cleaned the fish.
Mary getting ready to do some serious fixing on the production line!
Here's an old timer that would have been used to deliver the tins once they were boxed up.These women were dressed as the women who would have worked in the cannery gutting fish. they are interacting with the bronze statues outside the cannery.
Although the cannery is now closed as a commercial operation, many fishing boats still go out from this wharf to fish.
