Sue has taken 3 days off work to take us out to places we have not been before. Alan had watched a documentary on Eltham Palace so suggested we go there. It was within easy reach so we packed up picnic and set out late morning. We took the scenic route which meant we went through some of the little villages with narrow streets and quaint houses and shops.
Beautiful gardens have been established in what would have been the moat. Sue is getting some inspiration for her herbaceous border.
Eltham Palace is the remains of one of England's largest medieval royal palaces and also the glamorous 1930s home of millionaires Stephen and Virginia Courtauld. It is an Art Dec house built with ocean liner elegance. the Courtlands built the house and managed to incorporate the medieval hall into it.

The ruins of the old Palace. All that remains is the Great Hall and it has been incorporated into the 1930s house.
The 1930s wing is straight ahead and the old hall is on the left.
