A Visit to Hughenden

Thursday August 1st

Today Hamish asked us where we wanted to go and we all agreed that Hughenden would be a good choice.  This is a National Trust property so Mary and Alan used their NZ Historic Places Trust cards to get in.

 Hugenden Manor from the front.
The view from the back looking over the formal gardens.

Hughenden is local in High Wycombe so it was only a short drive away.
It was the country home of Benjamin Disraeli who lived there from 1848 to 1881 .  There is a large collection of personal memorabilia which gives a real insight into his life the favourite Prime Minister of Queen Victoria.
Perhaps the most interesting part was Hughenden's secret wartime past. This is revealed in the Second World War room in the cellars, with interactive exhibits and eye-witness accounts.

Here I am trying out the camp stretcher in the bomb shelter.  Hugenden never got bombed but the Germans had it on the list, They knew something was going on there but not quite what.

The whole story can be found here.

The formal garden has been recreated based on the original designs of Mary Anne Disraeli and there are beautiful woodland walks surrounding this fascinating country home.

The view from the bottom of the garden of Hughenden.  High Wycombe is in a river valley and the hills rise up either side. Most of England is like a flat patchwork quilt but not here. As Hamish says,it's like living in Wellington.  It is okay walking down the hill to town but not much fun walking up.
